What others are saying about BasketCases

BasketCases is a must-read for everyone associated with youth basketball – parents, coaches, players and officials. In fact, my job would be easier if every NBA fan read it as well.

- Ken Mauer, NBA Referee

Basketball is the best sport in the world. It's critically important that we make youth basketball a positive experience for everyone involved -- especially the players.

I enjoyed BasketCases because it's the first book I've read that focuses on educating parents, coaches and players about the game. Derek Wolden's perspective as a basketball official provides valuable insight to make the youth basketball experience enjoyable for everyone.

- Gregg Popovich, 4-time NBA Champion (coach), 2003 NBA Coach of the Year

This is an important book for everyone interested in helping the game of basketball grow.

- Tubby Smith, Men's Basketball Coach, University of Minnesota

A must-read for youth basketball parents. It will change the way you watch the game, and in some cases, that's a good thing.

- Randy Shaver, KARE Television Sports Anchor, Youth Basketball Coach/Parent

BasketCases is clever, insightful and engaging. If parents, coaches and officials follow Derek’s suggestions, the real winners will be kids who play this great game.

- Steve Javie, NBA Referee

BasketCases fits perfectly with our mission to make youth basketball a rewarding experience for kids. A must-read for every youth basketball parent.

- Neal Fox, Youth Director, Mahtomedi Basketball Association

Every week, I hear firsthand the frustration associated with the youth basketball experience from parents and coaches. The need for BasketCases has never been greater.

- Buddy Hemric, Associate Director, Minnesota Youth Athletic Services

I'm a better basketball official because Derek Wolden took the time to mentor me and teach me about the intricacies of the game. He provided insight about rules, judgement, positioning, patience, age-appropriate officiating and how to manage a game.

I love working with him. I can't think of a better person to teach youth basketball parents and coaches across the country about the ways to make youth basketball a positive experience.

- Jerry Johnson, Youth Basketball Official

Besieged by a growing number of "BasketCase" parents and coaches, many respectful and ethical parents, coaches, players, and officials are frustrated, overwhelmed, and just plain giving up on organized youth
sports. Derek Wolden's new book, BasketCases, is specifically directed at addressing the kinds of abusive behavior that is ruining youth athletic programs across the country.

With humor and insight drawn from his many years of experience as a college, high school, and youth basketball referee, Mr. Wolden's book offers encouragement and practical solutions to all of us who spend countless hours supporting youth athletics because we believe kids can learn valuable life skills by participating, and, above all, we want them to have fun!

- Ron Weill, Basketball Referee

To help tip-off our 2010-11 youth basketball season, the EPBBA (Eden Prairie Boys Basketball Association) sponsored an event featuring Derek Wolden. We purchased his book, "BasketCases: How Youth Basketball Parents Can Lower Their Blood Pressure and Keep Their Sanity" for every parent who attended.

Derek has a direct and engaging speaking style; and the presentation was enjoyed by the 80-plus youth basketball parents who attended. Derek’s book is an excellent guide for all of us involved in youth basketball (parents, coaches, and refs). We even purchased books for our high school-age referees who work our younger grade in-house games.

Overall, having Derek speak to our association, and providing books for as many of our members as possible has been a very positive experience. One we know will pay us back many times over for both this season and beyond. Thanks Derek!
